Workers Compensation

In most states, domestic employees (housekeepers, baby-sitters, etc.) who are injured “on the job” are entitled to Workers Compensation insurance, which covers medical payments and lost wages.  High-quality Homeowners insurance policies typically include Workers Compensation coverage for part-time/incidental employees (e.g. housekeeper that works twice weekly; babysitter that works Friday nights), but coverage is NOT provided for fulltime employees (e.g. live-in nanny; or onsite property caretaker).  State law may require that you maintain a separate Workers Compensation insurance policy (and possibly a Disability insurance policy) for fulltime domestic workers. NOTE: Workers Compensation and Disability insurance requirements apply, even if the domestic employee is paid cash.  The annual premium for a typical policy is approximately $800.

Employment Practices Liability Insurance

Employment Practices Liability Insurance addresses claims by domestic employees of wrongful termination, sexual harassment, employment discrimination, etc. As our society becomes more litigious, these domestic employment claims are increasing in frequency, and can be very costly to defend and settle.

Not-For-Profit Directors & Officers Liability Insurance

If you sit on a not-for-profit board, personal Directors & Officers Liability insurance addresses bodily injury and/or property damage claims against you, relating to your service as a board-member/officer.  NOTE: this insurance does NOT substitute for the organization’s commercial Directors & Officers Liability policy (which is critical if you are a not-for-profit board member.)  This coverage is open to individuals who sit on five (5) or less boards.
