Bruce Jenner, Auto Insurance Limits, and You

As you may have seen, there is a lot of speculation about Bruce Jenner, and potential law suits associated with the deadly accident he was involved in.  The gist is that even if you have good auto insurance with a reasonable limit ($250,000), it may not be enough under extreme circumstances, especially if you have a lot of assets to protect.  You can read more about Bruce Jenner’s potential legal issues here in the Insurance Business America story.

So, what does this mean to you?  First of all, you need to do all you can to protect yourself.  Bruce Jenner has a lot of assets to protect, and had plenty of disposable income to purchase the proper insurance.  He should have carried a $500,000 auto policy, with a huge personal umbrella over that.  With these policies, we would not be discussing his potential legal woes.  You should note that he was going the speed limit, he was not drunk, it was the middle of the day, and he was not charged.  There is some question about his using his phone at the time of the accident, but I have not heard any verification of this.  Still, the risk of being sued is present regardless of his being charged, and he is left with a minimum of protection.

Bruce Jenner’s $250,000 limit actually is more than most drivers carry, But it certainly wasn’t enough for him.  What if you are in an accident caused by another driver, and that driver has incredibly low, or even no insurance?  Well, read our blog on Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage to see how this coverage protects you under these circumstances.

In the end, it is all about protecting yourself.  If you have a lot of assets, you need more protection.  If you have a family, you need more protection.  Driving is becoming safer and safer, but deadly accidents still plague us on a regular basis.  Wear your seat belt, buy a car with proper safety equipment, drive safely, and carry the proper insurance.  In the end, it might make the difference to you and those that depend on you.
